The Augmentative India by Amaratya Sen

Writing on Indian culture, History and Identity.

Dialogues between Krishna and Arjuna which appears in Bhagwat Gita are impressive and educative and lasting.

It is priority of doing ones duty….. “Krishna insists on Arjuna’s duty to fight, irrespective of his valuation of the consequences. It is a just cause and as a warrior and General on whom his side must rely obligation, no matter what the consequences are”. Arjuna’s profound doubts are not really vanquished ‘no matter what the message of Bhagwat Gita is meant to be. There remains a powerful case for faring well’ and not just ‘forward’.

Despite the compulsions to ‘fare forward’ there was reason also for reflecting of Arjuna’s concern. “How can good come from killing so many people? And why should I seek victory. Kingdom or happiness for my own side.”

This argument of Arjuna in dialogue with Krishna impressed the leader of the team which developed weapon of mass destruction during the Second World War- J Robert Oppenheimer was moved to quote Krishan’s words. ( I am become the death, the destroyer of worlds is when he saw on July 16, 1945 the awesome force of the first nuclear explosion devised by man.)

How can good come from killing so many people. But USA did not realize or regret but dropped another atom bomb in Nagasaki in Japan.

Amaratya Sen has talked a lot about Hindus and Hindutava, Muslims, Akbar and others, Christians coming to India in 4th century but has not mentioned about Guru Nanak, Guru Gobind Singh, Khalsa’s fights against Muslim terrorism. Auranzeb’s killing of Guru Tech Bahadur in Chandani Chowk or even about Guru Granth Sahib which contains verses of Hindu saints like Namdev and Muslim Sufis like Farid and Kabir. He has only mentioned about Sikhs in few lines at the end about anti Sikh riots after assassination of Indira Gandhi because the congress Government has not done anything to punish the criminals who were led by congressmen. He has not mentioned even about Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s conquest upto Khyber Pass. This is sad omission by Amaratya Sen in such an historic volume which has been acclaimed as “product of a great mind at the peak of its power “(Sunday Times)

But as outlined on prepage there are some important contributions and references by the one who won Nobel Prize second Bengali and 4th Indian. The so called Song of ‘creation’ in Vedas ends with the following radical doubts.

“Who really knows, who will here proclaim it? Where produced? Where is this creation? The gods came after words with the creation of their universe who then knows when it has arisen?”

“When this creation has arisen- perhaps it formed itself or perhaps it did not- and the one who looks down on it, in the highest heaven, only he knows or perhaps he does not know.”

This is one of the most important quotations from Vedas which makes Amaratya Sen and others to know how blind faith on anything in any saying is not worthy. It is important and rational like Arjuna to examine or think before taking a step. It is much more important for leaders like George Bush of USA to think of the consequences in death and devastation before ordering attack on Iraq and prior to that sending US Army to Afghanistan. Other leaders of nations including China and India should also do the same. Had Chinese leaders bothered to think on these lines there would not have been 1962 war with India. Had Pakistan, immediately after its creation not trained and armed tribals from NWFP to Kashmir there would have been lasting peace between India and Pakistan.

In a recent interview, Amartya Sen Nobel Laureate had all the praise for Manmohan, as he called him, both for his economic policy of liberalism as well as his courteous behavior with every one whether it is “George Bush or King of Bhutan”. It will interest everyone to quote Amartya Sen as under:

“I don’t think these policies have been neo-liberal. Had they been we would have done much worse in economic crises. As an old friend may I say that people seem to miss? He is immensely well behaved with absolutely everybody, people say things like “when I saw him with Bush he looked so happy and so supportive” . But you see any picture of Manmohan and he always looks friendly and supportive….. I would defy you to find a picture of Manmohan looking angrily at any one. I haven’t seen one in 54 years I have known him.  Whether that is a lacuna in a politician…. But if there is a fault, it is a fault of generosity and courteousness.”

I don’t Think what glowing tribute Amartya Sen had paid to our Prime Minister, as an economist, as a courteous politician and as a superb smiling  human being, Amartya Sen has paid to any other living politician or economist in India and even abroad.

On Possibility of Disintegration of Pakistan

Ayesha Jalal, a celebrated historian of Pakistan even admits that for the last 62 years since its creation, Pakistan has been battling for the survival, though being a Pakistani she does not admit or say that Pakistan is facing disintegration. Though she has written about Taliban, their creation by USA and Pakistan to oust USSR communist from Afghanistan, which had virtually become a communist country for a number of years. “US and Saudi Arabia” gave billions of dollars to Pakistan Army to oust communist from Afghanistan and punish or exile Afghan communists who supported Soviet Union and established communist government in Muslim Afghanistan. Pakistan Army funded the substantial amount of this money to Madrassas in NWFP and tribal areas….. these madrassas became assembly places for militants who were considered to be an asset to the Pakistan Army’s quest for strategic depth in Afghanistan. Once the Russians left the Army continued to ‘Jehad’ in Afghanistan and Kashmir to the deteriment of Pakistan’s internal security.

Being a Pakistani she has not concluded or mentioned in the article that NWFP which had been part of Afghanistan would want independence from Pakistan and either be an independent  country or join Afghanistan. Pakistan is battling for survival because of Jehadi’s led by Talibans of NWFP and  Jehadis of any type in Punjab.

Similar is case of Balochistan, where militants are fighting for independence. Another Pakistani writer Omer Farooq Khan says about Swat, “there is no guarantee of success for so troubled a region.. What happens in Balochistan where separatist movement has waged its own war since 2004? What happens then ? Does a new fault line taking failing   Pakistan to the point of no return?” It will be observed that both the prominent Journalist of Pakistan are of the opinion that Pakistan has reached ‘point of no return’ so far as unified Pakistan with NWFP and Balochistan, as its provinces, is concerned, its fate depends on the fate of USA’s failure or success in Afghanistan. If USA fails in Afghanistan as it failed in Vietnam war against communists then Pakistan cannot remain unaffected. It may face disintegration as flow of billions of dollars from USA and Saudi Arabia will stop and Pakistan’s Army may not get incentive to fight or even get normal pay and allowances.

India has suffered for almost 62 years from Pakistan’s menace and its sending armed Talibans or other tribal from NWFP to Kashmir. This criminal folly of Pakistan has cost heavy tall of Army and para military personnel as well as Kashmir’s peaceful citizens. Pakistan’s encouragement, financing and arming of Taliban and other terrorists  led to many attacks in India, to name few, attack on Parliament, attack on Bombay train and latest attack on Taj Hotel killing many, including foreign citizens. Thus India would be anxiously watching when NWFP secedes or becomes calm and quiet. Whether Pakistan remains intact or disintegrates.

Even in 1952 when Pakistan was well established and there was no tribal problem, if any, it was being ignored, LOVEDAY PRIOR in his book Punjab Prelude, writes: “A substantial portion of Pakistan revenue is allotted to trans border tribes to buy them off, all the same both these are being stirred up by Afghanistan to claim the secession of NWFP and other tribal areas from Pakistan.”

East Pakistan i.e. East Bengal now Bangladesh has already seceded from Pakistan because Pakistan tried to impose West Pakistan Army and Urdu language on Bengalis. This had failed and with the help of neighboring India it seceded and came to be known as Bangladesh, an independent country. Similarly Pakistan, all these 62 years has been trying to impose Urdu, the national language of Pakistan on Pashtu speaking Pathans but has failed and faces secession of NWFP.

Pakistan, in this unprecedented turmoil, is not in a position to enter into any agreement on Kashmir with India. It is therefore better to see which way the wind blows: whether NWFP remains part of Pakistan or not. Pakistan disintegrates or not. Talibans and other Jehadis became normal citizens of Pakistan or not. Suicide Bombing by Talibans stops or not. Peace returns to Pakistan or not.

Anti National Stand of MNS and Shiv Sena

Raj Thackeray’s outburst’s and actions during last 4-5 years, with his MNS not allowing SP MLA Abu Asim Rizvi to take oath in Hindi and even creating condition of rioting and hooliganism inside and outside the Assembly, this act is very unfortunate as Hindi is the National Language and the only, SP member tried to take oath in Hindi and was prevented. Raj Thackeray had earlier declared that all MLA’s must take oath in Marathi, which is the state language of Maharashtra. Sachin Tendulkar, greatest cricketer of India and even world had said that he is proud of being a Maharshtrian but he is an Indian first. To this not only Raj Thackeray but even the Shiv Sena founder and head, Bal Thackeray objected saying Tendulkar should play cricket and not politics. There were comments in Media against Raj Thackeray and his MNS to understand what is wrong in saying that I am Maharashtrian or Kerelite or Bengali or Punjabi etc and also saying that I am Indian? Literally some Maharashtrians like Chavan Chief Minister of Maharashtra have objected to Raj and Bal Thackeray’s attitudes and expressions. How it will be erased? How it will be solved? How soon? How before it spreads to other states?

All political parties and their eminent leaders have expressed their concern and annoyance. Here are comments of some of the leaders of National Political Parties.

Ashok Chavan, Maharashtra CM of INC

“We are proud of what Sachin has done. I am surprised some people are criticizing him”

Arun Jaitely, BJP leader

“Sachin is entirely correct. India is proud of him and he is proud of being an Indian”

Brinda Karat, CPI (M) leader

“Sachin believes Mumbai belongs to whole of India. So do the majority of people in Mumbai”

Bihari’s CM, Nitish Kumar and former CM Lalu Prasad Yadav, too have condemned the statements of Raj and Bal Thackeray.

Now about Sachin’s exact words and also that of Bal Thackeray.

Sachin Tendulkar’s statement to Media Persons in Mumbai.

“Mumbai belongs to India. I’m a Maharashtrian and I’m proud of that, but I am an Indian first.”

Bal Thackeray in his open letter SAAMNA wrote about Sachin Tendulkar “You are free to hit fours and sixes, but keep off the political pitch. With that statement you are ‘run out’.”

Years back, for instigating his party members, who were joined by hooligans, many Bihari’s were beaten and many more threatened. So many, to save their lives left Mumbai. There was an FIR against Raj Thackeray for instigating, people of Mumbai to commit crimes against non Maharashtrian. The case went on for some months but nothing came out. At that time Bal Thackeray remained quiet. Had Raj Thackeray been put behind bars along with other criminals matters would not have reached this stage. Raj Thackeray and Bal Thackeray, though unintentionally, have created a situation which tends to divide Indians which Sachin Tendulkar, he, too, unintentionally has made statement which tends to unite all Indians.

82 years old Bal Thackeray had been worried since in the last elections to Maharashtra Assembly his Shiv Sena lost a number a seats while his  nephew Raj’s party MNS gained quite much. In his open letter in his own paper Saamna, he has written against Sachin. For this purpose he has taken the command of Shiv Sena after 5 years rising from reclining chair  and dumped his son Udhay Thackeray to be one up against his nephew has said much more which many intellectuals and congressmen, in particular, think that what Bal Thackeray said it is worthy of throwing into “Dust bin.”

In an open letter in Saamna, Bal Thackeray vehemently condemned Sachin’s few words that is “Indian first” though proud of being a Maharashtrian and for saying “Mumbai belongs to all Indians” Shiv Sena left no stone unturned to put Tendulkar to shame and prompt him to issue a rejoinder or something only in favour of Marathi and Maharashtra. But Sachin got bravos from all sportsmen, all political parties and all intellectuals even Maharashtrians, all over India. There seems no question of Sachin apologizing or even contradicting his famous statement that he is Indian first.

If people like Raj and Bal Thackeray go ahead to make Mumbai for Maharastitrian only and ultimately force, non Maharashtrians  to save their lives, leave Mumbai what will be the consequences? What will happen in Kolkata where there are many Gujratis, Biharis, Punjabis and others? What will happen in Bangalore, where people from all states are almost settled because of it being soft-were capital of India. What will happen in Delhi which is capital of India but surrounded by UP and Haryana where there are millions of non Hindi speaking people from all states?

All Indians when they go abroad for work and then settle in countries like USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany in Latin America and African countries are known and they call themselves Indians, not Gujaratis, Maharashtrian, Punjabis, Biharis, Bengalis, Karelites, Tamilians etc. USA in particular is proud of these Indians who have attained great success in many fields, particularly in Information Technology, and some Indians have become governors of certain states of USA. MLAs and MPs, even an Indian is a Minister in Obama government.

Lakshmi Mittal, one of the worlds richest person who now lives in London, Molecular Biologist, Venkat Ramchandran, who shared this years Nobel Prize in chemistry is based in USA, Pranay Mistry, who works at MIT’s tech lab is the founder of futuristic techno invention sixth sense which may change the way we live. Indra Nooyi, who is pride of Indian women as she is Pepsi Co Chief. She lives in USA. There are more than a hundred thousand Indians settled in foreign countries many of whom have attained destinations in their field of work.

As we started with Azmi let us conclude with what he says and means. Azmi is proud of having lived in Mumbai. After spectacular victory in two constituencies in last Assembly elections he has said. “I love Marathi just as I love my mother tongue” It is unfortunate I do not know Marathi even though I grew up and prospered in Maharashtra” He also says in interview with S Balakrishnan. “After the attack on north Indian students in Kalyan station by Raj’s boys….. when North Indians were beaten up for no reason….. Why has Raj Thackeray not been jailed despite his provocative statements?”

So all Maharashtrians, including Raj and Bal Thackeray and their followers of MNS and Shiv Sena, who are proud of being Maharashtrians, should also be, like Sachin Tendulkar, icon of cricket, and Marashtra’s Chief Minister Chavan, be proud of being Indians first…. It should not be ignored or forgotten that non Maharashtrians have contributed a lot in the progress and development of Mumbai as Mumbai is Business Capital of India and also of Film Industry because of Bollywood and earn for Mumbai and India lakhs of crores of rupees and billions of US dollars in Foreign Exchange. JAI HIND

Similarly Pakistan, all these 62 years has been trying to impose Urdu, the national language of Pakistan on Pashtu speaking Pathans nut has failed.

Intervention in Afghanistan to finish the Taliban rule and eliminate Talibans, there are daily attacks by American Air Force on tribal Taliban in Baluchistan  border and even in NWFP. Already Swat Valley in NWFP virtually declared independence and it was reluctantly recognized by Zardari Government as it had signed Peace Agreement with violent Talibans then. But Talibans continued to fight. Pakistan is in dilemma if it is too tough on Talibans, it will face their wrath more ferociously. On the other hand, if Pakistan is lenient, it will lose American support and money to survive. Thus dismemberment of Pakistan is now a greater possibility than ever before. Talibans, a creation of Pakistan and USA so as to oust Communists, in which they succeeded, and Afghanistan became free of Communists. NWFP has become Talibans and other terrorists breeding ground and headache for USA, Pakistan and even India. How long Pakistan with help from USA will be able to control by war and bombing Talibans? This war cannot go on forever and even for long. Accordingly, further dismemberment of Pakistan seems a possibility, after East Pakistan having seceded. Americans cannot go on fighting in Afghanistan for decades to save Pakistan from Taliban’s and its eventual dismemberment.

Pakistan, in this unprecedented turmoil, is not in a position to enter into any agreement on Kashmir with India. It is therefore better to see which way the wind blows: whether NWFP remains part of Pakistan or not.

Berlin Wall – Its Erection and Demolition

After the Second World War, USSR conquered, besides Eastern Europe, half of Germany. Accordingly after Allied Victory and defeat of Germany there were two Germanys- Anglo American conquest of West Germany and USSR conquest of Eastern Germany, Western Germany under Capitalist democracy and East Germany under Communist type of democracy. There was lot of hue and cry on the division of Germany into two parts. But in 1945 defeated Germans were helpless. They could not demand anything. They could not get anything. They were a defeated country that had gone to war to conquer entire Europe including USSR.

During Second World War Germany under Adolf Hitler, the Fascist dictator, committed many crimes against humanity, besides launching a war on East and West of Germany, killing millions, six million Jews were killed in gas chambers.

Now let us see how, when and why Berlin Wall was built to segregate West and East Germany, the artificial division of a country with one language and one culture. Berlin Wall was constructed by Soviet Government in 1961 because Germans, in thousands were leaving their homes and hearths, were crossing the so called boundary and going to West Germany where they were welcomed and where there was, now, real democracy neither Hitlerite Fascism nor communist type of thought control. West Germany had, in a few years, after the end of Second World War became real home of all Germans. About 100 Germans from East had died while crossing and trying to escape from East Germany.

Berlin Wall was built to stop this emigration form East to West Germany which was defaming USSR and telling not only West Germans but whole of World that USSR was itself not worth living.  This emigration was having far-reaching effect on Eastern Europe which after war was under communism. Poland in particular resented so much that its leaders were thinking of revolting against so called USSR occupation of their country.

During World War II almost half of Berlin had been destroyed by Allied bombings. As a result population of Berlin declined from 43 lakhs in 1938 to about 28 lakh in 1945. As British, French and US forces were far off, Soviet Union shipped “about 85 percent of city’s undamaged industrial equipment” to its own country as British and American troops reached Berlin in July and French troops entered Berlin in August 1945. Though Berlin was completely under Soviet Union, Western Powers demanded free passage which USSR did not accept. So the Berlin City was also divided into two parts East Berlin under USSR and West Berlin under Allies control, as earlier they had divided East and West Germany into two parts.

Division of Berlin, which was virtually on paper, did not work. Particularly it failed to satisfy Soviets as lot of East Germans and East Berliners were emigrating to West Berlin and West Germany. So  the USSR, in 1948 blocked all routes rail, road and water from East Berlin to West Berlin. Western powers, not to be left behind air lifted supplies to West Berlin for about 2 million residents. Thus the Soviet blockade failed and Soviet Union lifted the blockade in May 1949 but City Hall located in East Berlin was occupied by Russians. So the West Berlin had to have its own government in West Berlin. Within four years of the end of War, West and Russia became almost hostile over Berlin issue.

In 1958 Nikita Khrushev asked for demilitarization of West Berlin and converting it into free Zone. To this Western powers disagreed and rejected the proposed solution. As everyday more than 1000 East Germans were crossing into West Berlin and West Germany Russia in 1961 decided to build a strong wall to prevent any emigration to West Berlin/ West Germany. Thus in August 1961 strong Berlin Wall was built which was 4 meters in height and 40 kilometers in length. Berlin became an isolated city.

Bitterness in relations between Western Powers and USSR continued unabated for a decade. Only in 1971 USSR and West realized the  folly of segregation of Germans into East and West German’s. History is never static. History moves in all countries, all cultures and all civilizations. Thus in 1971, USSR and Allies (France, England and USA) signed an agreement on the status of Berlin. Representatives of East and West Germany sat together for months and finally worked out details agreeable to both the parties. So the agreement of 1971 came into effect in 1972. Relation with East and West Berlin and East and West Germany improved in 70’s. In 1989 there were wide spread demands for unification of East and West Berlin. East German government considering the time ripe for unification of East and West Berlin, removed all restriction on November 9, 1989 and as a result 29 year old Berlin wall was ‘opened’ and in due course demolished. It was a great day for Germans after defeat in World War II it was a first taste of victory. Though unification of Berlin and in due course of East and West Germany becoming once again an important country of Europe Germany.

Historic celebration of 20th anniversary of Demolition of Berlin Wall were attended by/besides million of Germans, all the leaders of the countries who fought war against Hitler’s Fascist Germany and defeated him after loss of millions of lives. Leaders who attended the historic function included German President Horst Koehler and Chacellor  Angela Merkel  British PM Gordon Brown, French President Nicolos Sarkozy, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Polish President Lech Walesa, and Hilary Clinton U.S Foreign Secretary. Former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev was a special attraction as it is Gorbachev whose reforming attitude persuaded Soviet leadership to the reforms. According the German crowd gathered to celebrate chanted “Gorby, Gorby, Gorby.” British PM Gordon Brown said “Two Berlins are one. Two Germanys are one. Two Europes are one.” This marks the significance of 7th November 1989 and so such almost world wide celebrations of 20th anniversary of Berlin Walls Demolition.

Love Of Parents for Children is Divine

As parents are the real and only gods, at least gods on the earth, so parents love for children is the most selfless. They will not eat till their children have eaten, they will not sleep till their tiny tots have slept. The starving mother will feed her child from her dry breasts even though she has not taken a morsel for days. If children fall and get hurt, the physical pain is of the child but psychological pain, which is even far more severe, is of parents. If children are away for more than usual time the parents suffer the pain of separation and start feeling the worst even though children might be playing in a neighborhood home, or  little distance away.

Similarly, children who have imbided love and affection in good measure love their parents, particularly old parents, helpless parents, parents suffering from so many infirmities, and other sufferings due to loss of property, source of independent income, insecurity etc.

Conflict in our social life arises and arises too often when old parents, young wife and small children have equal and simultaneous demands on a person’s love; even his sisters demand more than equal love and attention than due to beloved wife, particularly the unmarried young sisters. Under these circumstances it is really a tough time for the person who is decent civilized and in love with his parents, his children, his wife and his younger sisters. For one who is unscrupulous and without love it is easy to discard his parents and sisters and be devoted though superficially to his wife and children because essentially he is in love with only himself, which is not love but selfishness bordering meanness.

The success of the man in love with all around him depends on resolving these conflicts amicably without at least minimum possible hurt to the feelings of any of the conflicting parties devoting equal measure of his love and devotion. Who needs more love particularly at the time of the crisis, the ailing mother on deathbed or the young wife. There are cases not as simple as the above one where decision is very difficult and requires firm foundation in love and decency and selflessness. These are the qualities in that man, who loves and becomes love personified, which resolve such complex social and psychological problems, which no amount of teaching and training can give simple and straight solution. One has to find the solution with faith and devotion in goodness, love and selflessness.

Love

Love is ability to sacrifice ones own interest for the one whom one loves; Love is to feel for one whom one loves; love is subline feeling of wishing always good of one whom one loves; love is to ignore the faults of one whom one loves; love is to suffer silently and deliberately for the well being of one whom one loves. Love above all is subline sentiment that is embedded in the nature of the man for excellence, who can sacrifice his own personal interest, his own welfare, his own ego for the one whom one loves. Love is spontaneous and selfless without regard to any contraction or even praise or acknowledgement.

If one can have this quality of selflessness and feeling for others then alone one can love – his parent who have given him life and brought him up after unknown  sacrifices; his brothers and sisters who have during his childhood and thereafter shared his joys and sorrows; his friends in school, college and neighborhood who have stood by him through thick and thin; his beloved who as ones first love in adolescent years, whether one has succeeded in having the beloved as life companion or not, his wife who has given him love and children whether one has loved her before marriage or not; his children whether they are healthy or not, beautiful or not, intelligent or not, successful or not. Love for ones country, culture and mother tongue is as significant as any other love, whether the country is rich or poor whether it had given him much, little or nothing. Similarly love for mother tongue and culture, whether the language is developed or not whether culture is superior or equal to other cultures of the world or not.

To sum up: love is absence of greed so that one is not envious or jealous of others wealth, property or high status in society. Love is absence of ego-feeling that one is supreme in one aspect of life or other. Love is absence of hatred even for known bad characters.

Thus love is greatest virtue; it is doing greatest good to those whom one loves. Love of humanity and help to needy human beings is greatest religion and highest morality.
