IPL HANGAMA

With regard to Kochi IPL fiasco in which two or three people are involved besides Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar while with regard to Modi’s IPL hangama ten to twenty people are likely to be involved. How such huge amount of money including in foreign exchange or from foreign countries has been coming? How many thousands of crores of rupees? How much income tax has been paid during first and second Indian Premier League T-20 i.e. IPL? How much was the betting amount in thousands of crores of rupees? Who and for whom betting went on? Who benefited the most? How much money was involved in betting for each IPL franchise and who were the other bidders. How many US dollars were paid to foreign players of IPL? How many Indian sponsors were there like Vijay Malaya, Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta etc and others franchisees?

These are relevant questions the answers to which will be out only after thorough probe by Income Tax and CBI authorities. Finance Minister has promised thorough investigation, implying no guilty person would be spared. It is hoped this probe and investigation will not take years but would be over within a couple of months at the most. Shashi Tharoor’s associate, Sunanda Pushkar, too, is in trouble as her association and financing of Kochi IPL are under investigation and she may not be allowed to leave India till the end of investigation against her and clean chit given to her. She is bound to pay income tax on her so called “sweat equity” in Randeavous Sports World even though she has given it up.

Shashi Tharoor, though hailed from Kerala spent many years in USA. After having spent many years in United Nations he rose to position of Asstt Secy General of UN, thereafter he came back to India. He was appointed in UPA government as Minister of State for External Affairs. He wanted an IPL for his home State. In his enthusiasm he involved his friend Sunanda Pushkar and got into trouble because Lalit Modi, Chairman IPL feared that if Shashi Tharoor a Minister in UPA gets associated with IPL his position as IPL commissioner would be in danger. So Modi put obstacles in the way of Kochi IPL. This has created a big problem for both Tharoor and Modi. Media took advantage of this conflict between two prominent persons and highlighted the controversy day after day. It divided the MP’s in two groups. Virtually entire opposition demanding Shashi Tharoor’s resignation as Minister. On return of US tour PM Manmohan Singh in consultation with Sonia Gandhi advised Tharoor to tender his resignation which he promptly did.

For a number of days Sharad Pawar continued to back him but, sensing the mood of UPA and Parliament he has withdrawn support or dumped Lalit Modi. The President of IPL since met Sharad Pawar and other members of the IPL governing body. Since Shashi Tharur was directed to resign because of his involvement in IPL controversy. On 26th April itself after the last IPL T20 concluded, Lalit Modi was removed, without a hearing, or a chance given by BCC, to explain his conduct, and in his place interim Commissioner Amin was appointed. Investigations by Income Tax authorities and CBI are continuing to find out the guilty besides Lalit Modi. It is hoped the investigations by both CBI and Income Tax authorities will be thorough and prompt and thereafter, as promised by Home Ministers, no guilty person will be spared. Then alone IPL Hungama will be over and it will be lesson to BCCI and other to be fair and transparent in their dealings, appointments of commissioners and also to keep watch on all transactions in time.
