Wither Pakistan- Two Assassinations of Notable Politicians in two months of 2011? – Implications

Though Pakistan, India’s neighbor, has been in turmoil for almost a decade, worst seems to be happening or might happen in 2011 onward. Two high profile politicians have been murdered within a short span of two months. First tragic happening was the killing on 4 January, 2011 of Salman Tasear Governor of Punjab in Lahore by the killer bodyguards. It is evident that they had been influenced by Taliban or other jehadi outfits of Pakistan. On 2 March 2011, the only Christian cabinet minister of Pakistan was assassinated obviously by Islamist or Talibans of Punjab. Yet another tragic attempt on 6 March was on –provincial minister of Sindh. Though there was close firing but miraculously M&M minister Zubaia Khan escaped and did not die. M QM Chief, Altaf Hussain condemned the second attempt on MQM provincial assembly adding that last year MQM member Rana Haider was shot dead and there was large scale violence in Karachi. There has been large scale killing in NWFP since long both by Taliban’s and Pakistan Army. Now the remaining two provinces of Pakistan are facing violence and death at the hands of local as well as Talibans from NWFP.

Assassination of two high profile politicians and another from MQM in Sindh, as outlined above, has caused more worries to India particularly because of killing of moderate Governor of Punjab in Lahore which is 100 km or so from Indian border with Pakistan. Pakistan has been financing, arming and sending terrorist and Talibans from NWFP to create unrest in Kashmir since Kashmir’s accession to India. The worst ISI backed terrorist attack on India’s Taj Hotel was in 2008 in which more than 200, including some American and some foreigners perished.

Relations between Pakistan and USA have been strained since the arrest of US National Raymond David for killing two Pakistanis on January 27 2011. Though Davis is in jail despite US insisting earlier that he is a s diplomat and has diplomatic immunity but on protest from Pakistan that he has never been associated with US embassy or otherwise referred to as diplomat; USA changed its stand. It has sent special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan to negotiate with Pakistan at highest level to get David’s release. The special envoy Grossman met Pakistan Prime Minister Gilani on 7 March 2011 in Islamabad. He is now carrying on negotiation with Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir. Pakistan fears that Davis might be killed by the guards, so he is rather protected by unarmed guards because if Davis is killed it will create more bitterness in USA which will not be in the interest of either Pakistan or USA or even Afghanistan.

Pakistan should learn lesson from violent protest in Egypt and Libya, besides other Arab countries in North Africa and Middle East. Autocratic dictator of Egypt has been ousted after three weeks of violent protest causing death of more than 600 Egyptian citizens. Libya’s dictator for 41 years even after four weeks violent protest and killing of more than 6000 Libyan citizens and now by adding fuel to fire as Libyan rebels, in retaliation on 9 March, 2011 attacked oil facilities in oil rich area of east Libya causing huge explosions. Gaddafi has to go dead or alive. Pakistan has had dictatorship and knows well the evils of dictatorship. The Pakistan should endeavor to curb rise of Talibans and Islamists of various categories. Once Talibans come into power as Islamist dictator, Pakistan’s condition may be worse than that of Afghanistan.

It is in Pakistan own interest that Pakistan becomes a democracy like Turkey, a Muslim country which has been liberal democrat since Kamaal Ataturk realized its benefits in comparison to fundamentalist Islam. As in Turkey so in Pakistan, under democracy people will rise, will have more education, even women will taste equality with men. It will also enhance good neighborly relations with India and certainly will get more financial aid from USA even after 2012 when either Obama gets a second term or another US President of Democratic Party comes to power.

Kashmir – Support by Deoband For Unity with India

It is a lesson for Geelani, his supporter colleagues and followers as well as even for Omar Abdulah that a massive conclave of Deoband clerics have snubbed the separatists in Kashmir. It is first time that on 10th October Darul Uloom Deoband spiritual leaders of Sunni Muslims of India have openly come in favour Kashmirs accession to India saying openly in a congregation that Kashmir is integral part of India, have openly condemned the Kashmiri separatists, who led the recent agitation for so called Azadi for 5 months that resulted in loss of about hundred lives of mostly innocent youth of Kashmir and even women for no fault of theirs. They were instigated and led by separatist time and again, even during curfew, to pelt stones on Security personnel. Latest and the worst was attack on school buses carrying school children to their schools or returning from schools after 5 months idleness at home. Thirteen children were hurt but parents insisted that buses should continue to run. Unfortunately Omar Abdullah the PM of Kashmir too lost temper recently and blamed Central Government as well as accession of Kashmir to India not realizing that it was his own failure during last six months in particular to build confidence in favour of Kashmir as part of India.

Views and comments of important Muslim leaders of India, for the first time since partition of India on religious ground and creation of Pakistan which after 63 years is in turmoil because of Taliban on one hand, their frequent suicide bombing right upto Islamabad and Lahore and Karachi. On the other hand frequent bombing by USA, on Pakistan in absolute violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and a threat to Pakistan’s government. Pakistan’s failure as a Muslim state has opened the eyes of Indian Muslim leaders who have come openly in support of India’s unity and Kashmir’s unity with India which is a secular state, caring for all religions equally.

Senior religious leader, Darul Theolegiun, Abul Rahim Bastawi description of India has far reaching significance, which has not been said so far by any Muslim leader of India. Bastawi, Darul theolegiun said “India is bouquet of all types of flowers. We cannot allow any of the flowers to be taken away.” The resolution passed by Darul conclave made it further clear though not in poetic words of Bastawi but equally significant. The resolution passed in the enclave on Sunday said: “the long pending demands of Kashmiri people must be addressed within the framework of the Constitution of India.”

Both Geelani and Omar Abdullah must go through the views expressed by Bastawi a noted theologian as well as the resolution passed by the most important conclave of Muslims and instantly change their views for the sake of Kashmir and Kashmiri people who have suffered a lot because of separatists like Geelani’s instigation and incapacity of Omar Abdulha, in handling the situation being head of Jammu and Kashmir. All Kashmiri leaders and people should not forget the criminal folly of Pakistan in 1947-48 of sending non – Kashmiri militants from NWFP trained and financed by Pakistan to enter Kashmir, kill and loot Kashmiris indiscriminately at a time when there was standstill agreement. Pakistan had sent its army in support of Jehadis to capture Kashmir’s capital Srinagar. It prompted Hari Singh to sign instrument of accession of J&K to India and on the plea of Sheikh Abdulah and Sardar Patel to send Indian Army to stop the aggression and save the lives and honour of many and save Kashmir. Rest is history well known, defeat of Pakistan’s Army and Jehadis and Cease Fire.

Kashmir Crisis and Solution

It is months that Kashmir Valley is passing through one of the worst prolonged crisis. The present crisis started with the death of one Kashmiri youth on June 11, when during an agitation in which he was ahead, a teargas shell hit his head and he died. Thereafter the disturbed conditions got worsened almost every day because of hard liner Huruyat’s instigation, pelting of stones on police and CRPF personnel started and went on for days. In self defence and to curb violent agitation police and CRPF had to fire which resulted in the killing of 13 persons including a nine year old boy and 25 year old woman. As the situation was getting out of control Chief Minister Omar in consultation with Central Government of India called the Army a fortnight back. Curfew had to be imposed a number of times so that there is no agitation and Army troops won’t be required to use force, leading to killing of anyone. The Army personnel maintained utmost control while marching through streets of Srinagar and other disturbed areas of valley like Avantnag and Baramulla. During the relaxation of curfew, which was essential, so that citizens could come out and purchase essential commodities like rice, wheat, pulses and vegetables etc. During relaxation of curfew there was no disturbance.

However on Sunday the July 18, a class XII student of Gurunanak School Baramulla, north of Srinagar got drowned, because it is said by the locals that Army cops chased him. So that once again situation does not get out of control in Baramulla, hundreds of troops started patrolling streets as a preventive measure in some areas of Srinagar.

Now question arises as to what is the root cause of sporadic crisis in Srinagar and in many parts of the valley though, Jammu area has been peaceful throughout the present crisis though, Jammu area is part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In brief it must be stated that Kashmir problem is as old as India’s Independence and creation of Pakistan. Even before the accession of Kashmir, newly created Muslim state of Pakistan equipped and transported from NWFP area militants to capture Srinagar. When these Pakistani militants captured Baramulla India had to airlift the Army troops to reach Srinagar in time before the intruders from Pakistan capture Srinagar airport. Thus Kashmir crisis for the last 62 years is Pakistan’s creation. Tension and sporadic crisis continue despite Indian Army’s heroic efforts to throw out the Pakistani Army and temporary settlement of LOC (Line of Control) and despite limited wars between Pakistan and India. This is in short the cause of Kashmir crisis, engineered financed for sending Pakistani citizens, now more from Pakistan occupied part of Kashmir.

What is the solution? What is the way of ending Kashmir crisis once for all? Now that when Pakistan is in the words of US President Obama ‘cancer of terrorism.’ Because of upsurge of Taliban militants and terrorists in not only NWFP and Baluchistan but whole of Pakistan by suicide bombing upto Lahore, Pakistan cannot be expected to control the Taliban and other militants from entering Kashmir valley and cause unrest, agitations and instigation.

India has to show it determination as a strong country to prevent crossing of LOC from Pakistan. Station more Army units in areas like Baramulla and Srinagar. Curfew may have to be relaxed often for long, for the citizens of Kashmir, who are Indian citizens so that they can be engaged in useful activities like harvesting fruit particularly apples and transport to India and also the other activities like making wonderful shawls and handicrafts so that they are proud of their hard work and good earnings by their own labour.

At political level in Kashmir, Omar Abdulla should consult frequently and impress the opposition parties, which have to be there in a democracy and elected government. Kashmir has been integral part of India since times memorial, even during Muslim and Mughal rule, British rule and shall ever remain as paradise of India.

India Pakistan and USA

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s latest meeting with President Obama of USA seems to have been quite successful. On Manmohan Singh’s insistence Obama has promised to restrain Pakistan from sending terrorist of Al Qiada Taliban etc to India. PM has also got assurance of 9/11 bombing of Mumbai. Further, President Obama was serious in preventing Pakistan government’s access to nuclear missiles. Our Prime Minister has also suggested formation of a wider organization to control the spread of nuclear energy and weapons. There are few achievements of Manmohan Singh’s US visit on April 12 to 14, of this year.

USA is more concerned with its own problems in Iraq Afghanistan and even Talibans of Pakistan. USA and President Obama are rather worried because even after a decade, Afghanistan and Iraq problems do not appear to be over despite US and NATO allies armies using their best armies and weapons and in addition bombing by Drone planes. During last decade or so more than one lakh insurgents in Iraq Afghanistan and Pakistan have been killed besides many thousand civilians because of suicide bombing by insurgents, in addition to USA and NATO armies attacks on their hide outs in Afghanistan and tribal areas of Pakistan in NWFP and Baluchistan.

Recently Afghanistan President, Hamid Karzai criticized US military attacks on the hide outs of Taliban killing many civilians and Talibans. All this has led to intensive retaliation by Talibans even on the Afghan capital Kabul and embassies located close by even Indian embassy. USA is, since then more worried about Afghanistan.

President Obama is more worried about insurgencies continuing in Iraq and Afghanistan as America is not in any way near a victory or solution though the US President has virtually announced to withdraw US Army from Afghanistan and Iraq by the end of 2010. Because of thousands of Americans having been killed and wounded during a decade of fighting, Obama is losing his popularity which is on decline.

Thus it is evident that USA cares much more for Pakistan by giving billions of dollars as financial aid as well as latest arms so that Pakistan Army tackles Taliban particularly in the tribal areas of NWFP and Baluchistan, by following dictate of USA and attacking Taliban in their hide-outs, killing not only Talibans but the civilian population too, which is displaced. Because of all these attacks by USA and Pakistan Army, Pakistan Government is facing occasional suicide bombing in Lahore and Peshawar and areas adjoining the Pakistan Capital.

Thus, so far as India is concerned, despite half a dozen visits by Manmohan Singh and talks with President Obama and US officials, there can not be much support by USA to India. India unlike Pakistan, can not ne subservient to USA. India is the biggest democracy and second most highly populated state with diverse cultures and languages. No Prime Minister or Government of India can take a decision, unlike Pakistan, to support and help USA, as Pakistan has been doing for the last 50 years or so under different governments and dictatorships.

Even India-US nuclear deal is being reprocessed despite American pressure, sometime, for immediate approval or agreement by India. Manmohan Singh and Government of India can not approve this deal without approval of Parliament. There was heated debate in Parliament and lot of opposition by BJP and Communists in and outside Parliament. It is therefore not possible for Manmohan Singh to get Parliament’s approval to nuclear liability bill in the present form. Accordingly USA, too, has understood Manmohan Singh’s difficulties and has toned down its requirements. US Ambassador to India has said on March 29 that “arrangement and procedure” for reprocessing US origin spent fuel have been made. He further added “This instant step is part of the great win – win narrative of US India Global Partnership.

On relations with Pakistan and resumption of talks PM made it clear in his after Security Summit press conference “If Pakistan takes credible steps to bring perpetrators of horrible crimes of 26/11 bombing in Bombay, to book that is the minimum we expect. If Pakistan does that, we will be very happy to begin talks once again”. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh further said that he would not enter into argument with Pakistani PM Zardari on this subject as India had given all evidence against them and the LeT hand.

USA and Russia, biggest nuclear powers of the world, signed a protocol to get rid of 24 tons of plutonium each equivalent to 17000 weapons. The protocol was hailed as full success. This is the greatest achievement of the Nuclear Summit.

It is noteworthy that President Obama has expressed and even eulogized Indo-US friendship. He said after the conclusion of Nuclear Summit. “There is no country where opportunities for a strategic partnership are more important to me personally and to the US than are with India.” India hails this friendly gesture towards India by President Obama of USA.

Problem of Kashmir and Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits

Jawaharlal Nehru, though he himself was a Kashmiri Pandit the first Prime Minister of Independent India proved to be a weak PM particularly as long as Lord Mountbatten was Governor General of Dominion of India. He continued to be ineffective and docile till Sardar Patel, iron man of India, was alive. Nehru committed many blunders in the case of Kashmir as outlined by Vidya Bhushan in South Asia Today:

The first and biggest blunder was to make Jawahar Lal Nehru PM instead of Sardar Patel and another blunder was to assign Deptt of Kashmir Affairs to Nehru while all the other State Affairs were under Ministry of State under the charge of Sardar Patel.

Another blunder was to name the head of government of Kashmir as Prime Minister and not Chief Minister as was the case of hundreds of other Princely States. Also to name Srinagar Radio as Radio Kashmir and not All India Radio Kashmir.

But the greatest blunder was to let Mountbatten include a clause on the Instrument of Accession on Kashmir to India, that “will of the people” will be taken into account, which led to one crises after another viz referring the Kashmir question to UN, agreeing to cease fire when entire Kashmir could be conquered by Indian Army within a week and finally agreeing to plebiscite.

It is unfortunate that all these blunders on Kashmir were committed by Pt. Nehru, directly or indirectly which cost India thousands of valiant Indian Army personnel’s life and also of Kashmiris besides lakhs of crores of rupees during 62 years besides 1965 war with Pakistan Kashmir and also Kargil war, without any solution to Kashmir problem.

Before the conquest of Kashmir by Muslim Afghans, entire population of Kashmir was Hindu. But now there is absolute majority of Muslims in the Kashmir Valley but in Jammu area majority is of Hindus and in, Ladakh Buddhist before and after independence. It was Maharaja Ranjit Singh in early 8th century who conquered and ended Muslim (Afghan) rule after about 700 years. Just as he captured NWFP from Afghans, made both Kashmir and NWFP part of his (Indian) empire. B.N Sharma’s views in this context are touching so these are reproduced below:

” Have we ever tried analyze the course of almost complete demographic swing in favour of Muslims as the ethnic cleansing of Kashmir Pandits was going on under the benevolent gaze of the previous secular government at Delhi so aptly described by a Kashmiri Muslim Khurshid Vani—‘when bullets, blood and fundamentalism made their first inroad into the valley, 1.5 lakh Kashmiri Pandits left their paradise in fear, but 3000 families stayed back to fight, to survive and to live or die in their homes.’ Sadly more than a decade and a half later, the staying power of these gritty Pandits stands diluted by joblessness, anxiety and loneliness, not to talk of nagging fear. There are no grooms for daughters, no relatives to share family with, no hope of the return of exiled and, of course distress sale of ancestral properties. And the plight of Those who stayed back against all adversity.”

During Ranjit Singh’s reign over Kashmir and there after British rule by Dogra rulers Kashmir was quiet—no apparent Muslim dominance. But since independence because of Nehru’s follies and Pakistani indirect and direct intervention Kashmir problem has arisen and has got intensified. It is true and shocking but the secular government of India could not prevent it or do anything for return of Kashmiri Pandits which seems a remote possibility now. It may be possible, either after final agreement in black and white with Pakistan or after disintegration of Pakistan (NWFP becoming an independent state or joining Afghanistan) or when the Taliban menace is over either by peaceful settlement or by intensified war by USA as US President Obama has claimed by mid 2011 when all US Forces will be withdrawn from Afghanistan. If one of this possibility becomes reality, as it is hoped and peace returns to Kashmir after few years then and then alone it may or will be possible for Kahmiri Pandits to return to their homes in Kashmir and become integrated Kashmiris as before independence of India.

Hindutva – Its true meaning and implications

After defeat of BJP in the 2009 elections, there is much talk about HIndutva, whether it should be diluted to keep the RSS with BJP as its cadre party and source or to abandon it altogether to make BJP a truly secular so that it also attracts Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and other small minorities of India to make BJP truly All India Party and an All India challenge to Indian National Congress.

The word Hindutva was coined and used first of all by V.D. Savarkar. “Hinduism is a religion that all Hindus follow with all the rituals and worshiping all the Hindu Gods, Lord Rama, Krishna, Hanuman and other regional gods whose statues are all over India and worshiped by devout Hindus. It also means respect and if possible knowledge of Ramayana, Mahabarat, Vedas, Shastra and other many millennium old Hindu or Vedic Literature. Hindutva also means that India Civilization embraces all those who live in India, to whatever religion they belong but they have to love Indian Civilization in contrast to Muslim Civilization as propagated in Mecca and Christian Civilization as explained and propagated by Pope of Rome.”

RSS Chief K S Sudarshan in 2201 while addressing a large gathering in Hardwar said ” The time has come when both Muslims and Christians who are living in India should Indianize their religions. They should sever their links with Mecca and Pope and instead become swadeshi.” (The Tribune Chandigarh March 9, 2001) An extremist Hindu Brig B N Sharma (Retd) in his book, ” A Nation on Fire,” defines Hindutva as: Hindutva collective essence of ” Hinduism and is the end product of three elements, cultural nationalism, intense patriotism, and a pride in the collective memory of India’s past glory.” But Brig Sharma, as the title of book reveals, is not moderate but fundamentalist. He has ridiculed so called seculars who are more concerned with vote bank than with nation’s interest.

If BJP follows fully and faithfully what K.S Sudarshan says then BJP can never become all embracing Indian Political Party where followers of any religion will be welcome, just as Hindus, without any discrimination. It is pertinent to quote Dr Chaudhary as under.

“The seeds of pathological antipathy and diabolical hatred against Muslims and Christians in India sown by Savarkar have now fully fructified, thanks to the constant watering and manuring of seeds at the hands of the Sangh Parivar. It resulted into the shameless act of demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in 1992 followed by communal holocaust all over the country in which hundreds of innocent citizens lost their lives. Then came the systematic persecution of Christians resulting into the horrendous act of burning alive of an Australian Christian doctor engaged into healing lepers, along with his adolescent sons in Orissa.” (South Asia Today)

If BJP follows Hindutva, in its full form with all the implicayions, it may attract towards BJP more and more Hindus with the active help of more than a dozen RSS volunteering organizations in virtually all fields like student and teacher organization, workers of industrial and academic fields, women and in tribal sphere etc, etc… But still it will remain only a Hindu Communal organization. To be a Secular All India Party BJP will have to dilute HIndutva and make it appear truly an Indian Civilization and part of all comprehensive Indian Cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic groups of whole of India.

It was mainly Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s farsight and determination that transformed Bhartya Jan Sangh a Hindu Party like RSS into BJP an All India National Party like Indian National Congress and captured power in 1998 and ruled the country for full term of 5 years without virtual alliance with any party except Akali Dal as in Punjab. If BJP tries to be a truly secular party lot of uncommitted voters from religions and regions will support it.

Since Advani’s praise for Jinnaha, when he visited Pakistan, without bothering to go deep into Jinnaha’s thinking in 1940’s and actions in 1946 to instigate West Bengal Government of Muslim League to abandon the rights and rules of and go ahead with ‘Direct Action’ which led to Kolkata Killings—it was certain that Advani should either quit BJP Presidentship and as leader of opposition, Lok Sabha, or would be ousted. Accordingly during early December 09, on the advice of RSS Chief, virtually little known in national politics, Nitin Gadkari 52 years old was chosen to replace Advani as BJP president. In Advani’s place Sushma Swaraj, who once contested elections against Sonia Gandhi in South India though lost but proved to be both daring and well-versed in parliamentary affairs, was nominated as leader of opposition while another prominent BJP young leader Jaitley was to continue BJP leader in Rajya Sabha.

All these developments had to be stated in brief because both Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitely are moderates and not enthusiastic about Hindutava. They are more interested, like Vajpayee, to make BJP an All India Party to include all Indians of all castes and religions. It is heartening to note that in his first interview on 20th December 2009, Godkari, new BJP Chief has said ” I would like to involve more Dalits, Tribals and Muslims in the BJP” He father said: “I would like to concentrate on youth workers and farmers. I will concentrate my polities of development at the national level.” If Godkari sticks to what he has said in this interview, it would mean dilution of Hindutava for BJP.

No doubt Muslim terrorists, jehadis of many hues and Taliban by their incursions and killings through suicide bombing like 9/11 in USA and 26/11 in Bombay have encouraged RSS followers, Israelis and some Christian Countries to give befitting reply. But for peace of the world and peace in their own country tact, patience and action are required as and when necessary. So far as India is concerned because of Indian farmers, skilled and unskilled labourers and since last two decades Indian technocrats and managers being in limelight particularly in USA, it is imperative that Indians shun fundamentalism of Hindutava. India must remain secular and India’s image should be that of biggest democracy in the world.

On Possibility of Disintegration of Pakistan

Ayesha Jalal, a celebrated historian of Pakistan even admits that for the last 62 years since its creation, Pakistan has been battling for the survival, though being a Pakistani she does not admit or say that Pakistan is facing disintegration. Though she has written about Taliban, their creation by USA and Pakistan to oust USSR communist from Afghanistan, which had virtually become a communist country for a number of years. “US and Saudi Arabia” gave billions of dollars to Pakistan Army to oust communist from Afghanistan and punish or exile Afghan communists who supported Soviet Union and established communist government in Muslim Afghanistan. Pakistan Army funded the substantial amount of this money to Madrassas in NWFP and tribal areas….. these madrassas became assembly places for militants who were considered to be an asset to the Pakistan Army’s quest for strategic depth in Afghanistan. Once the Russians left the Army continued to ‘Jehad’ in Afghanistan and Kashmir to the deteriment of Pakistan’s internal security.

Being a Pakistani she has not concluded or mentioned in the article that NWFP which had been part of Afghanistan would want independence from Pakistan and either be an independent  country or join Afghanistan. Pakistan is battling for survival because of Jehadi’s led by Talibans of NWFP and  Jehadis of any type in Punjab.

Similar is case of Balochistan, where militants are fighting for independence. Another Pakistani writer Omer Farooq Khan says about Swat, “there is no guarantee of success for so troubled a region.. What happens in Balochistan where separatist movement has waged its own war since 2004? What happens then ? Does a new fault line taking failing   Pakistan to the point of no return?” It will be observed that both the prominent Journalist of Pakistan are of the opinion that Pakistan has reached ‘point of no return’ so far as unified Pakistan with NWFP and Balochistan, as its provinces, is concerned, its fate depends on the fate of USA’s failure or success in Afghanistan. If USA fails in Afghanistan as it failed in Vietnam war against communists then Pakistan cannot remain unaffected. It may face disintegration as flow of billions of dollars from USA and Saudi Arabia will stop and Pakistan’s Army may not get incentive to fight or even get normal pay and allowances.

India has suffered for almost 62 years from Pakistan’s menace and its sending armed Talibans or other tribal from NWFP to Kashmir. This criminal folly of Pakistan has cost heavy tall of Army and para military personnel as well as Kashmir’s peaceful citizens. Pakistan’s encouragement, financing and arming of Taliban and other terrorists  led to many attacks in India, to name few, attack on Parliament, attack on Bombay train and latest attack on Taj Hotel killing many, including foreign citizens. Thus India would be anxiously watching when NWFP secedes or becomes calm and quiet. Whether Pakistan remains intact or disintegrates.

Even in 1952 when Pakistan was well established and there was no tribal problem, if any, it was being ignored, LOVEDAY PRIOR in his book Punjab Prelude, writes: “A substantial portion of Pakistan revenue is allotted to trans border tribes to buy them off, all the same both these are being stirred up by Afghanistan to claim the secession of NWFP and other tribal areas from Pakistan.”

East Pakistan i.e. East Bengal now Bangladesh has already seceded from Pakistan because Pakistan tried to impose West Pakistan Army and Urdu language on Bengalis. This had failed and with the help of neighboring India it seceded and came to be known as Bangladesh, an independent country. Similarly Pakistan, all these 62 years has been trying to impose Urdu, the national language of Pakistan on Pashtu speaking Pathans but has failed and faces secession of NWFP.

Pakistan, in this unprecedented turmoil, is not in a position to enter into any agreement on Kashmir with India. It is therefore better to see which way the wind blows: whether NWFP remains part of Pakistan or not. Pakistan disintegrates or not. Talibans and other Jehadis became normal citizens of Pakistan or not. Suicide Bombing by Talibans stops or not. Peace returns to Pakistan or not.

Similarly Pakistan, all these 62 years has been trying to impose Urdu, the national language of Pakistan on Pashtu speaking Pathans nut has failed.

Intervention in Afghanistan to finish the Taliban rule and eliminate Talibans, there are daily attacks by American Air Force on tribal Taliban in Baluchistan  border and even in NWFP. Already Swat Valley in NWFP virtually declared independence and it was reluctantly recognized by Zardari Government as it had signed Peace Agreement with violent Talibans then. But Talibans continued to fight. Pakistan is in dilemma if it is too tough on Talibans, it will face their wrath more ferociously. On the other hand, if Pakistan is lenient, it will lose American support and money to survive. Thus dismemberment of Pakistan is now a greater possibility than ever before. Talibans, a creation of Pakistan and USA so as to oust Communists, in which they succeeded, and Afghanistan became free of Communists. NWFP has become Talibans and other terrorists breeding ground and headache for USA, Pakistan and even India. How long Pakistan with help from USA will be able to control by war and bombing Talibans? This war cannot go on forever and even for long. Accordingly, further dismemberment of Pakistan seems a possibility, after East Pakistan having seceded. Americans cannot go on fighting in Afghanistan for decades to save Pakistan from Taliban’s and its eventual dismemberment.

Pakistan, in this unprecedented turmoil, is not in a position to enter into any agreement on Kashmir with India. It is therefore better to see which way the wind blows: whether NWFP remains part of Pakistan or not.

Origin Of Two Nation Theory

British and Syed Ahmed Khan were co-founder of Pakistan as British preferred to rule by the policy of Divide and Rule, So they encouraged men like Sir Syed who was just a sub-judge but well versed in English and Knighted by British Government on the obvious recommendation of British rulers of India, to perpetuate and strengthen two nation theory initiated by their policy of ‘Divide and Rule’ ie divide Hindu’s and Muslims so that they unitedly do not create problem for British rulers demanding, in due course, independence, but instead fight among themselves.
I reproduce below extracts from Speech of Sri Syed Ahmed from the book ‘Great Speeches of Modern India’ by R. Mukherjee.
This fiery speech was delivered by Syed Ahmed in Meerut in 1888, just three years after the creation of Indian National Congress by Octavian Hume in Bombay which was meant by the British Rulers that it would remain Loyal to British Government of India. Thus it will be seen that foundation of two-nation theory in India was laid down by the British with the help of men like Syed Ahmed Khan.
“I will treat in regular sequence of the political questions of India, in order that you may have full opportunity of giving your attention to them. The first of all is this, In whose hands shall the Administration and the Empire of India rest? Now, suppose that all the English and the whole English army were to leave India, taking with them all their cannons and their splendid weapons and everything, then who would be rulers of India? Is it possible that under these circumstances two nations- the Mohammedans and the Hindus- could sit on the same throne and remain equal in power?
