President Obama’s Speech on the State of Nation – And His Future

Two years, 2011 and 2012 are crucial for President Obama who is first black President of USA. During last two years his popularity in US has been vacillating between 60 percent highest to 40 percent lowest. The President was faced with many problems besides problem of Afghanistan War with Taliban which was 10 years old and US intervention in Iraq. Both these problems were created by his predecessor George Bush and were left burning and harming American interest. The other problem of great magnitude was running deficit and federal debt, though these were caused by worldwide recession for which, too, America was held responsible as there was virtually no recession effect on China’s economy and also little impact on the economy of other Asian countries like India, Middle East and South East Asia. Though Barack Obama the newly elected US President was expected to solve these problems to put economy of USA once more rising and deficit going down, as well as unemployment. As unemployment in USA had risen to 9.4 or 10 percent and, if added the huge number of part time workers, it would touch 20 percent, not keeping pace with increase in population during the same period. Thus it is reported that his recent speech has failed to pacify the nation which had hoped that during the next two years Obama will be able to solve the basic economic problems like rising deficit and equally important rising unemployment.

President Obama’s speech on the state of Nation in early Feb 2010 about US under his presidentship during last two years and January 2011 has not shown any improvement in the American economy and international prestige but there has been determination, rather marked, in federal deficit, employment and general economy. About the remaining two years of Obama’s present tenure as President it is to be seen whether there is likelihood of marked improvement in employment as well as national economy. With regard to Afghanistan he first said that American troops will be withdrawn by the end of 2010 but not much has been achieved, accordingly date of withdrawal of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan has been extended to July 2011. It is to be seen whether completion of US withdrawal is achieved by that deadline and Taliban problem solved so that American sponsored President Karzai is able to function as President peacefully without suicide bombing and other hostile attacks by Taliban. If there is no peace by that time and no stable democratic government of Karzai as President, it will mean absolute failure of US policy in Afghanistan and unnecessary loss of trillion of US dollars every year and loss of hundreds of US and NATO soldiers every year, besides loss of million of lives of Afghans, as well as in parts of Pakistan. NWFP and Baluchistan and loss of stability in Pakistan.

Problem of Iraq is only 4-5 years old but in Iraq, too, there is suicide bombing more frequently than in Afghanistan and the US sponsored democratic government seems to be a farce. No stability in Iraq is within sight. America will be leaving Iraq unsettled and in greater turmoil than when America under George Bush intervened for no reason. Obama has to withdraw from Iraq in the interest of USA and in his own interest so that there is no further loss of US and NATO lives and loss of hundreds of trillion dollars effecting American Economy and prestige in the world.

Will Obama before the next elections of President of USA in 2012 be able to achieve something tangible and something that has impact on US Economy, reduction of Federal deficit and nation wide improvement in employment, reduction, in inflation, increase in American production of industries and Trade?

President Obama inspite of his best efforts could not solve the basic problem due to world wide recession much more effective in USA than in other countries even of Europe as pointed out above. Obama alone cannot be held responsible or blamed for almost failure to uplift and drastically improve American economy. No new leader can bring drastic change as it is considered unrealistic as in USA to expect snow fall in August. However Obama made efforts. In December 2010 he dropped the plan of imposing new taxes and raising taxes on the rich citizens and, to stimulate the sluggish economy, entered into fresh borrowing. Obama’s new economic policy was criticized by many members of House of representative in which republicans now had gained majority. President Clinton, too, in 1995 faced similar position but finally triumphed. Though for the time being Obama’s popularity had got boost from 45% in November to 50% in December.

Next two years are crucial and deciding factors for Obama’s popularity. Possibility of his winning for second term as President depends (mainly on improvement in economy, particularly factors like unemployment which has been the highest ever 10 percent and if self employed are added to 20 percent as explained above and the second factor of fall of GDP from 4% to 2%, below the annual increase in population.) Besides the problem of health services and federal debt increase.

US economy as well as Obama’s popularity may get some boost if USA finally and fully withdraws its troops from Afghanistan and Iraq by the end of 2011. But if withdrawal from Afghanistan leads to down-fall of Karzai government and control of Afghanistan, as never before, by Talibans, America and Obama will lose their stature in the eyes of the world, particularly before the NATO countries who sent their soldiers to fight against Talibans and suffered economically and politically in their own countries. Similarly in Iraq US and NATO withdrawal will mean continuous unrest and suicide bombing. Pakistan is already in turmoil because of American intervention and Drove bombing and is facing dismemberment and may become breeding ground of terrorists, which may endanger America and even neighbouring India’s security. On 4th of Feb 2011 America even hinted of breaking diplomatic relation with Pakistan. What more can be worse for Obama and USA?

Decline in Obama’s Popularity- Cause and Effect

It is reported in American press that now after almost two years of Obama being first non-white elected as US President, his popularity in US has gone down. Sixty percent of Americans are now not happy with Obama and his policies at home and abroad, economic policies because of steep decline in economy because of uncontrolled recession and in foreign affairs apparent failure of USA both in Afghanistan and Iraq. In Afghanistan there are at present 1,50,000 soldiers more than 50 percent being US soldiers. Despite such an armed intervention in Afghanistan for the last more than 10 years Taliban threat to American soldiers and Karzai Government has not and does not seem to be over in the near future. Despite Drone attacks in Taliban hide-outs in hilly tracts of NWFP and Baluchistan, Taliban suicide attacks in Lahore and latest one in busy market of Peshawar killing more 150 innocent unarmed citizens, men, women and children is horrifying. What has America achieved by fight against Taliban in Afghanistan and NWFP and Baluchistan. American intervention has created worst ever suicide bombing in Pakistan killing thousands.

The question arises. Is Obama only to be blamed for American decline in international relations as well as in America? No, certainly not. Obama unfortunately, for him, became President of USA when both Afghanistan and Iraq were on fire. In contrast America was having no problems at home and abroad before George Bush became the President of USA. Taliban problem was initially created by America as to evict the Soviet Communist from Afghanistan and end the Communist rule there. America encouraged so called Talibans in Afghanistan and NWFP and Baluchistan in Pakistan by giving them money and arms in abundance. Though America succeeded in ending communist rule in Kabul but failed miserably to control Talibans which was America’s own creation with the help of Pakistan.

Similarly in Iraq President Bush’s attack on Iraq though it was verified by Americans themselves that Sadam Hussain did not have and was not in a position to have nuclear bombs. Despite the proof given by the American Scientists and nuclear experts George Bush launched an absolutely unnecessary attack on Iraq when American troops were already engaged in a war in Afghanistan to end the Taliban dominance in Kabul and introduce in Afghanistan democratic rule.

This is the legacy that unfortunately Barrack Obama had when he assumed American Presidency as first non-white American elected peacefully with majority of Americans all over America feeling happy that America has really become a democratic state where all Americans are equal whether they are whites or coloured or even if they are immigrants from India and rest of world. That is why Bobby Jindal, an Indian American became the first Governor of an American State and another Indian American woman, Nikki Haley is likely to take oath and become governor of another American State.

All this shows and confirms that it is not Obama who is to be blamed for failure of American policy at home and abroad. Though there is just now fall in Obama’s popularity it is hoped that after American and Nato troops get out of Afghanistan and Iraq, too, is left alone by the end of 2010, America and Obama will again shine in the comity of nations.
